Holland America's Club HAL: Great Time & Amazing Customer Service

This is a sponsored post. This post contains affiliate links.
Our experience with Club HAL on our cruise was amazing.

If you ask Catherine what was the best part of our recent cruise, she will emphatically exclaim "Kid's Club!"  Just look at that smile on her face!  (The face painting was a part of kid's club events.)  She loved it there, in fact, she still gets sad that we aren't on the Noordam so she can "go to Club HAL everyday!".

Club HAL® -- Kids is for children ages three to seven.  (I did see online that on the ms Prinsendam, children must be at least five.)  They play games, make crafts, color, play Legos, eat ice cream, watch movies, have a pajama party, and simply enjoy themselves.  Below is the main area for Catherine's age group, the three to seven year olds.  Tweens and teens have separate areas to play and hang out.

My daughter had a blast in this room during our cruise with Holland America.

Children participating in this program must be completely self-sufficient in the restroom as the staff cannot assist the kids.  They even had a smaller toilet and sink just for the kids!

The one and only negative was Catherine was quite sad one night.  On Pirate Night they built ships out of Legos but the "teachers", as she called them, put all of the Legos away before she had time to play with the ship.  All activities were scheduled, and while it was a somewhat loose schedule, they did try to follow it.  At home she's typically allowed to play with something until she's finished with it and then we move on to the next activity.  So I guess it was rather shocking and upsetting for her that she had to follow someone else's schedule and wasn't able to play with her creation.  I realize this is a very small thing, and it was exasperated by tiredness, but it was surprising to me to find Catherine on the verge of tears (even though she didn't want to leave) when I went to pick her up one night. (SEE MY UPDATE BELOW.)

Every single time I went to pick Catherine up from Club HAL she was disappointed to see me.  She always wanted to stay longer.  The above picture is after I picked her up and brought her back to our stateroom for bedtime.  She was begging and pleading to go back.  Dominic was sympathetic to her case.  While it was somewhat disheartening that my little girl didn't jump for joy to see me when she saw me coming to get her, I really loved that she enjoyed the youth activities.

It should be noted that Holland America takes the children's safety seriously, the staff at Club HAL is accredited by Praesidium, Inc..  They have a zero tolerance policy on child abuse.  All of the staff that Catherine and I encountered through Club HAL were fantastic.

UPDATE:

As you know from reading this post, we had the fantastic opportunity to enjoy a Holland America Cruise.  I recently posted about our, and specifically Catherine's, experiences at Club HAL.  Overall she loved her time at "kids club".  In fact, she still talks about it regularly, mostly lamenting the fact that she can't go today.  As noted above, the one minor blemish of the week was that she didn't have time to play with her Lego creation one night.

A couple of days ago a large mysterious package arrived on our doorstep.  It was addressed to Catherine.  Her birthday isn't for a couple of months, and the grandparents hadn't said anything about sending something, so we were perplexed.

We opened it together and found an awesome Pirate Ship.  At the bottom of the box was the invoice with the note: "Sorry to hear you didn't get to play with your Lego boat at Club HAL. Hope you can enjoy playing with this one."  It only took a second to realize that this set was a gift from Holland America.

Seriously, this Duplo set is pretty cool -- and this is coming from someone way past the recommended age.  A captain's wheel, mast and sail, a treasure chest, and even a cannon that shoots "balls" all come with this set.  Catherine did a great job putting it all together the "right" way first, and then had a blast free-playing with the blocks.  Upon opening the box she played with the Pirate ship for almost three hours, with minimal breaks.  We even ate dinner at our breakfast bar that night because the dining room table was still covered with the ship, an island, treasure, and the like.  She has played with the set everyday since then for hours.  Dominic has even been able to get in on some of the fun.

This has to be one of the most amazing instances of customer service that I've seen.  They cared about our experience -- even months after -- even though it was something minor.  Catherine loved Club HAL, and will emphatically tell you that it was the best part of the cruise.

I have to admit, this attention to detail, even long after we have disembarked, makes me want to sail exclusively on Holland America.  I'm not sure when our next cruise will be, but they have my vote!

Thank you, Holland America!

I did receive a few amenities free of charge from Holland America, but everything you read on my blog is my honest opinion.

Cruise Cuisine Aboard Holland America's ms Noordam

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Holland America.  All opinions are my own. This post may contain affiliate links.

It's no secret that food is a big part of a cruise.  Upon entering our lovely stateroom aboard Holland America's ms Noordam we were greeted with an incredibly appetizing display of "yummyness".  Fresh fruit, shrimp, and chocolate were tantalizingly waiting for us on our table.  Catherine and Dominic waited, only somewhat patiently, for me to to take a couple of quick pictures.

All of the food was delicious. Like I said before in my Quick Review, this was my fifth cruise and I think it was the best food yet. We enjoyed food from the buffet, the main dinning room, poolside, in our room, at The Pinnacle Grill, and at Canaletto.  The service everywhere was absolutely impeccable, with notable increase at the more formal choices.

I wasn't sure if I would like having a set dinnertime, but I have been completely won over. Not only would I say that I didn't end up minding it, I might even say that I prefer it! The wait staff got to know our preferences after our first day!  (Holland America does have As You Wish® Dining, so you have the option of early seating, late seating, or open seating.  We had early seating -- which I recommend if you have little ones.)

The kids loved the dinning room.  Catherine loves going to restaurants, despite the fact that she's often too picky to order off the menu, and she simply adored getting dressed up to go to a restaurant every single night.  (To be honest, we don't eat out much so it really was exciting for her.)  Dominic also enjoyed the dining room.  They provided a highchair, which was waiting for us at our table every night.  (A bonus of the set dinnertime!)  One of my favorite dishes was a soup appetizer, the Butternut and Scallions soup.  Dominic shared so much that I had to ask for seconds!

Once again, I must rave about the service we received daily in the main dining room.  Our server, Doni S., went above and beyond. Catherine still plays with her origami animals that he made daily for her.  (They posed together for the below picture.) The maitre d', Robbien F., was always helpful and very attentive. Of course, I can't forget our second waiter, Febi, who was also fantastic.  Thank you, guys!

I can't talk about the cruise food without talking about the buffet!  They had a large variety of all of the buffet basics and everything was very good.  Catherine very much enjoyed the "Jamaican Jello" among the many other goodies.  In my humble opinion, while the buffet is good, the service, atmosphere, and food make dining in the main dining room (and the  restaurants with a fee) an obvious choice, but I know that many people prefer the more relaxed buffet.

Thanks to Holland America we had the pleasure of dining at The Pinnacle Grill and at the Canaletto Restaurant.

There is a $29 per person additional fee to eat at The Pinnacle, but it is more than worth it! It was one of the most delicious meals that I've ever had.  Possibly the most delicious.

The menu (below) has a little something for everyone.  The sides are served family style, which means that they bring generous portions and place them in the center of the table.  This allows everyone to take as much or as little as they desire.  Our service was amazing.  We did bring the kids, but we made sure to have our reservations as early as possible.  Catherine, ever the picky eater, enjoyed bread and an apple, which our lovely waitress procured especially for her.  My Filet Mignon was so tender that I was able to cut it with a fork while holding Dominic.  (He did have a highchair, but wanted out at one point.)

Because I was so busy enjoying good food and company I didn't remember to take a picture until dessert came.  I had this decadent Volcano chocolate cake, which I actually found myself unable to finish because I was so full!  The pre-dessert chocolate truffles did me in.  So delicious!

Canaletto, which is delicious Italian fare, has a $10 per person fee.  This seems quite reasonable to me.  The food and service, once again, was amazing.  The atmosphere isn't quite as formal as The Pinnacle, or honestly, the main dining room, as Canaletto is located in the buffet area.  It is separated, and much nicer than the surrounding area, but there is still the din of the masses.  Once again, everything was simply delicious.  The bruschetta that they served was especially amazing.  We enjoyed it so much that we've attempted to replicate it ourselves at home.  (My husband even made homemade ricotta cheese to go with ours!)

One last note, the hamburgers at the poolside grill were the best burgers that I've had on a cruise.  They are grilled to order, so that makes them even better!

Bon appetit!

A Quick Review of Our Holland America Line Cruise Vacation

This is a sponsored post.  This post may contain affiliate links.
Catherine and I swimming at Half Moon Cay, Holland America's private island in the Bahamas.
That's our ship in the background.
We were super excited to be able to cruise on the ms Noordam just before Christmas.  Our group, spanning three generations, consisted of myself, my husband, Catherine (age 4), Dominic (9 months), Grandmom, and Grandpop.  We started in Fort Lauderdale and visited the Bahamas, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel.  There is simply no way I can fully cover everything that happened on our cruise, but here's a quick review!

This was my first time on a Holland America ship, and it was Catherine and Dominic's first cruise.  The ship itself was beautiful and classy.  I wouldn't call it understated, but it was not ostentatious.  There are a variety museum worthy masterpieces sprinkled throughout the ship.  I was also very happy that they decorated beautifully for Christmas.  Catherine thought the "golden room" was quite fancy.

Catherine especially loved the gingerbread village in the main atrium, aka the "golden room".
Our room was quite lovely.  We were pretty excited that we were able to have a Verandah stateroom at an affordable price.  It had a queen-sized bed, a little couch that converted to a bed for Catherine, and floor-to-ceiling windows. (There was also a drop down bed, but Dominic wasn't quite ready for it.)  The signature Mariner's Dream™ beds were actually quite comfy.  Our room stewards Hary and Yasa kept our room beautifully shipshape.  Catherine wasn't the only one that enjoyed the legendary animals that they made for us, I made sure to take a picture of every single one.

We attended a towel folding demonstration where they showed us how to make a variety of animals,
including a swan and an elephant.
There was always something fun to do!  Catherine loved the Club HAL, which is Holland America's youth program.  (She loved it so much that I have dedicated an entire blog post to Club HAL.)  I enjoyed the cooking demonstrations; I especially enjoyed the Creme Brulee demonstration and tasting!  Since the ship had two pools, there was always room for us to splash about.  The midship pool even had a movable roof, which was great when we were in Mexico because it was a very drippy day.

Catherine and I enjoyed the pool.
Isn't the dolphin sculpture behind us neat?
The nighttime entertainment was about average in my opinion.  On all of the other cruises that I've been on there were two viewings of the nightly big show.  This time there was only one.  Dominic, Grandpop, and I attended most of the magician's show.  While he didn't have any completely knock-your-socks-off tricks he did have a well put together routine, and it was quite humorous.  My husband, Grandpop, and I also enjoyed the comedian.  The big song and dance show was entertaining.  (Although I couldn't quite decide if the accompanying light show was cool or distracting.)  We didn't really participate in any of the other nightlife festivities.  Two activities that I never got the chance to attend (because I was busy doing other fun things!) were the Sit and Stitch and Afternoon Tea.

This was the best fourless chocolate cake ever.  Seriously.
The food was amazing.  This was my fifth cruise and I think it was the best cruise food yet.  The service was impeccable.  I wasn't sure if I would like having a set dinnertime, but I have been completely won over.  Not only would I say that I didn't end up minding it, I might even say that I prefer it!  The wait staff got to know our preferences after our first day!  Our server, Doni S., went above and beyond.  He made Catherine one happy little girl by making her a new origami animal every day.  The maitre d', Robbien F., was always helpful.  Doni and Robbien both made sure to have yogurt and milk for my extremely picky eater.  Our second waiter, Febi, was also fantastic.  We considered ourselves to have the best table in the dinning room.  We were at the very back by the windows.  Every night afforded us a gorgeous view.  (The food was so good that I decided to give it a blog post of its own!)

My cuties posing outside of the buffet.
Can you cruise with kids?  Absolutely!  Dominic and Catherine loved the cruise.  The staff absolutely doted on them.  I couldn't believe how many of them were able to call my children by name!  (I think Dominic was the most popular person on the entire ship!)  While cruising as a family was a very different experience from cruising as a couple, it worked out very well.  All of the restaurants had high chairs.  They made sure to deliver a child size and infant size life jacket to our room.  Club HAL gave Catherine a safe place to have "normal" playtime.  Kid friendly foods were readily available.  Even my extremely picky eater never went hungry.  (Be sure to check out my post on what to bring on a cruise if you have small children.)
