A Knitting Project: Swirl Hat with Flikka Yarn

This post contains affiliate links.

A quick knit.  That's what I needed.  I wasn't feeling particularly well a little bit ago and I wanted a project to keep my fingers busy, but I wasn't in the mood to work on any of my current WIPS.  The Swirl Hat was the perfect solution.

I've used this pattern before, and I really liked it for its simplicity and uniqueness.  The first time that I knitted the Swirl Hat I was very much a beginning knitter.  (You can check out that knitting project here!)

The yarn is Lion Brand's Flikka in Wading Pool.  It was a clearance find at Hobby Lobby recently.  It's a thinner yarn, a 3, I believe.  The skien has just under 200 yards, so it's perfect for small projects like a hat. The yarn is soft and I think it will be lovely to wear.  My one complaint is that my fingertips did turn a little blue, so the dye isn't quite set. It is supposed to be machine washable, but I haven't tried that yet.  I will be sure to wash with a color catcher

WIPS: Works In Progress

This post contains affiliate links.

It's been a long time since my last WIPS post.  Life is starting to give me a routine where I can more easily work with yarn again.  I have a project list a mile long!

A post shared by Rachel Furlong (@philwife) on

I've cast on a Hylan Sweater for my daughter.  The pattern is from The Velvet Acorn.  The yarn is Caron Century Collection in Robins Egg.  I've made a couple of mistakes already, to be expected as a self-taught, sometimes impatient, knitter.  I realized I was doing my left slant increases incorrectly.  I decided that this time it didn't bother me enough to frog it -- so I am forging ahead!

I'm trying to keep track of my progress using Ravelry's Project page. How do you like keeping track of works in progress?  Sometimes I don't think there's a need to catalog every project, but I do like being able to look back.  Also, it's especially helpful to have detailed notes if you have to put a project on hold for a day . . . or year.

I also have a small pile of so-very-close-to-being-finished projects.  These just need tails woven in or buttons.  Sometimes the last step of the project is the hardest.

How about you?  Are you currently able to fulfill your creative needs?

The Watermelon Hat: A Free Knitting Pattern

I received the yarn for this project in exchange for my honest opinion. This post contains affiliate links. This means that if you purchase something after clicking on one of these links I might receive a small commission. This is no way affects the price that you pay.

A girl is wearing a pink, green, and white hat with black beads.

This gorgeous yarn is from Love Knitting.  This fun Watermelon Hat was knitted using MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran in Shocking Pink and Emerald Green.  This yarn is so soft and squishy!  It's such a fun cozy yarn.  Each ball has 87 delicious yards of yarn.  It can be machine washed, but don't put it in the dryer, it needs to dry flat!  There is lovely stitch definition and it was a pleasure to knit.  I'd absolutely love to work with it again!

(I must say though, that while I loved knitting the yarn, trying to get a good picture of the pink, was, well, shockingly difficult!)

This is a close up shot of the hat brim. The watermelon theme is carried out with the use of color.

The Free Knitting Pattern

Begin knitting this hat with size 5.5 circular knitting needles.  I knit the entire hat on circular needles using the magic loop technique.

With GREEN yarn.
Cast on 80.  Join, being super careful not to twist.  I used the crochet hook cast on method, I really like the look and I'm super comfortable with a crochet hook!

Work a rib knit for about one inch, I had six rows.  I used a K1P1 rib knit, but you could use a K2P2 rib knit, whichever you prefer.

With white yarn.

Knit around.

Switch to size 6 circular knitting needles.

With Pink Yarn

Before knitting with the pink yarn you must add your "seeds".  When choosing your beads be sure that they will easily string onto the yarn.  I used some black beads, very much like these beads, from my craft hoard.  Use my yarn threading tip to make it easier and then thread on about 100 beads.  You will need to continually push the beads down towards the ball of yarn while you're knitting.  If you find this tiresome you could sew the beads on individually after you've finished knitting.  I randomly allowed the beads to be worked in.

Knit around.  Continue until hat reaches about four and a half inches high.  For reference, I knit 21 rows in pink before my first decrease row.

Decreases:
Round 1: *Knit 20 Stitches. Place stitch marker* four times around to end of round.
Round 2: *K1, K2tog, Knit to two stitches before next marker, SSK* four times around.
Repeat round 2 until there are 16 stitches remaining.
Round 3: K2tog around.
Break yarn and weave it through the remaining 8 stitches.  Finish off!

A note about the sizing of this hat.  My lovely daughter modeled this hat for me.  As you can see it fits her comfortably with just a slight amount of slouch.  The hat also fits me quite well.  Her head circumference is about 21 inches and mine is 22 inches.

A smiling girl is wearing a knitted watermelon hat.

Our Library Bag #4 and WIPS

This post contains affiliate links.

I'm combining posts today.  (Ginny's Yarn Along includes both knitting and reading, and she's awesome, so I might as well follow suite this week!)  Without further ado, here's what I'm knitting and reading right now:

After all of the Halloween costume crafting (Rey and BB8 from Star Wars) and coordinating shirt sewing, I am enjoying a very simple knitting project.  It's a straightforward, rolled-brim, no fuss, super basic beanie.  I'll share the pattern with you when I'm finished.

I also finally published my free Peacock Hood Crochet Pattern!  I really love the way that this hood turned out.  I used the incredibly popular Caron Cakes, and I think the color changes really work for this project, but of course you could use any similar weight yarn.

Don't forget to link up your own yarn-y projects at the weekly Yarn Fanatic Party!  This week's can be found here

The library shelf in our personal library is bursting at the seams.  As of today I have 54 books checked out on my card.  I asked Catherine, age 6, to select three of her current favorites for me to highlight on the blog.  She brought me the following:

Gazpacho for Nacho: It's a cute little story about a boy who only likes to eat one food, you guessed it, gazpacho.  The story is filled with Spanish words, which is such a great way to introduce another language.  (The glossary in the back is fantastic for non-Spanish speaking parents like myself.)  Despite it's message that there are a plethora of awesome foods out there it hasn't encouraged my picky eater to branch out.  (Shout out to Sweeping Up Joy for this recommendation!)

A Place for Zero: Catherine loved Fractions in Disguise so much that I immediately checked the library to see how many of the Math Adventure books they had.  Sadly, there aren't many, but I put holds on all that I could, of course.  Personally, I'd say A Place for Zero is rather weak compared to the fractions book, but it was still a good book.

Cranberry Thanksgiving: Now that it's November I have a giant stack of Thanksgiving themed books.  There is just something about this sweet story of a Grandmother, a Granddaughter, a bad guy, a scruffy hero, and delicious cranberry bread that exudes "Thanksgiving" to me.  Catherine says that she just loves this story.

Freight Train: There really is no question which book is Dominic's current favorite.  We've read this book roughly 9,999 times since it's been checked out.  I think the entire family has it memorized -- not that it's very hard to do.  Despite the fact that I might have had enough of this book it really is awesome.  The illustrations are stylized simplicity in bright bold colors.  The words  are carefully chosen.  This isn't a story book per se, since there's no actual story, but it's great for what it is.  It keeps my two year old engaged so I love it.  (Shout out to Rosie, she mentioned this book last month and I immediately added it to my library list.)

I finished The Mysterious Benedict Society.  I'd say it was just shy of being a great book.  I am now reading Hearts in Atlantis.  (My first King!  It feels like a milestone.)  I also have been reading a few fluffy books not worth mentioning, because sometimes we all need a little fluff.  Ok, I'll mention one of them: First Love.  Spoiler alert.  It's basically another Walk to Remember, but with way more grand theft auto and way less character development.  I'd give it a D+ and yet it still brought me to tears.

Yarn Fanatic Party #63

This post contains affiliate links.

Welcome to the sixty third Yarn Fanatic Party!  This weeklong party is a celebration of all things yarn.  I'm a little crazy about yarn, are you?

I have to ask, how many of you are on board the current color pooling crochet craze?  Anyone?  I'll admit that I went through my stash to see if I had any appropriate yarn and came up empty.  Of course, this means that I stopped in at Michaels with my coupons to pick up some yarn.  I'll let you know how it goes!

I always enjoying browsing through the amazing talent that links up here every week.  Julie's Candy Corn Coasters are so cute and seasonal!  (I'm totally diggin' the coaster holder too.)

Here's a blast from the past, this is a pumpkin hat that I crocheted for my niece a couple years ago.  (She's getting so big!)

Before we get to the linky there's one last thing I'd like to share with you.  I stumbled across this Rudolf crochet set on Amazon.  Oh my goodness, the cuteness!  (Who's started Christmas knitting & crochet?)

Link Up at The Yarn Fanatic Party!

What have you created with yarn?  It could be something you crocheted, knitted, or anything that used yarn.  (This is the YARN Fanatic Party!) It can be a new project or an old one.  I can't wait to see what you've created!

The only rule is that everything you link to must be family friendly.

I would appreciate it very much if you:

  • Add a link to the Yarn Fanatic Party to your post or party page.
  • Follow The Philosopher's Wife.
  • Check out some of the other yarn goodies people have finished.
  • Leave comments here, there, and everywhere.  (Please, take a moment to visit at least one other blog and leave a comment.  I want this to be a supportive community of yarn lovers.)
  • If you're not a blogger, but want to participate, feel free to upload a picture from Flicker!
  • By linking up you are giving me permission to share your photos here on the blog and via social media, with the appropriate credit, of course!

WIPS: Birds & Crochet, Plus a New Hat

This post contains affiliate links.

What bird(s) do you think of when you see this color combination?  While the colorway is "gelato" I'm all about feathers this time. (Full disclosure, this cell phone photo is pretty terrible, it just doesn't capture the true vibrancy of this yarn.  You can see it on Amazon and Michael's but even there the lighter green is somewhat washed out -- in person it's almost a neon lime green.)

I have a lovely pattern that I am working on writing up to share with you all, but I am still debating the name.  Maybe one of you will will be able to give me some inspiration.  Birds that are on my mind are peacock, parrot, and canary.

I have another project going using the Caron Cakes Yarn.  I am attempting to knit a hat sans pattern.  Always dangerous.  Especially since my knitting skills aren't nearly as honed as my crochet skills.  The brim is going to be a braided cable . . . at least, that's the current plan.  Cable charts terrify me.  I can read just about any crochet chart with no problem, and love when they're included for intricate patterns, but a knitting chart still looks completely foreign to me.  It's a fear that needs to be conquered though, because I adore the look of cables.  (And in my humble opinion, crochet cables just don't measure up.)

I'd like to invite everyone to link up their yarn-y projects at this week's Yarn Fanatic Party!  Also, don't forget about September's yarn giveaway!

As always, I'll be sharing this Works In Progress post at the Yarn Along and Kelp Calm Craft On

Yarn Fanatic Party #60

This post may contains affiliate links.

It's a new week, which means it's time for a new Yarn Fanatic Party!  Is it getting cooler where you live?  It seems that many crocheters and knitters craft more during the cooler months.  Is this true for you?  Of course, now I live in Florida . . . so it's pretty constantly hot.

One of my favorite projects from last week's Yarn Fanatic Party is this Crochet Cape by Over the Apple Tree.  Isn't it simply adorable?

I have a couple of low entry giveaways that I'd like to make sure you saw.  They aren't yarn related, but so often crafters are multi-talented.  My Childhood Treasures is giving aways a doll pattern of choice and Oh Sew Kat! is giving away patterns for a complete doll outfit!

Knitting Loom Hat with Red Heart Boutique Twilight Yarn

This post contains affiliate links. I received this yarn from Red Heart.

Catherine is her mother's daughter.  One of her birthday gifts was a knitting loom set.  She was thrilled.  I was thrilled that she was thrilled.  We sorted through my yarn stash and she starting naming projects for the different hanks and skeins she was finding -- which I suppose could be trouble down the line, because I already have projects slated for many of them -- but it was glorious mother and daughter bonding.  We got her set up with the loom and some yarn, and I was excited how intuitive she was about working with the yarn. (She wants to share her project with you all later!)

Of course, I was curious about the looms too.  Since her birthday gift included a whole set of looms Catherine quickly said I should use one too.  While I've been crocheting forever, and knitting since I was pregnant with Dominic, I've never worked with a knitting loom.  It was super easy and fun!  It doesn't replace a set of needles, but it's a great introduction to the world of yarn!  Or just a different way to play with yarn.

For my first ever knitting loom hat I used some Boutique Twilight Yarn in "Romantic" that I received from Red Heart.  This soft and bulky yarn was perfect for loom knitting.  I had a tiny bit of yarn remaining after I finished my hat, so the 59 yards was plenty for my hat, despite my trepidation of running out before I was finished.  As a mom, I have to mention that I love that the yarn is machine washable -- because, let's be honest, EVERYTHING needs to be washed sooner or later when you have kids.

The touch of shimmering metallic thread that runs through this yarn gives it that something special that makes this such a fun yarn!  Check out the Red Heart website for a list of available colors, and while you're there be sure to check out the related knitting and crochet patterns.

You can also get many of these yarns on Amazon.  Can we say "Yippee!" for Prime shipping benefits?  Have you tried Amazon Prime? Here's a 30-Day Free Trial!

Which of these colors is your favorite?
I'm particularly fond of "Jaded" today!

What have you made using a knitting loom?  Tell me about it!  Did you like it better than using  knitting needles?  Have you used a loom but never used needles?

I love sharing my projects around the internet.  You can find me at these parties.

In Threes Sweater with String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn

I received this yarn in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.
This post contains affiliate links.

This knit sweater just might be one of my most favorite projects.  Ever.  The pattern, In Threes, is straightforward and easy to modify.  The yarn, from String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn, is absolutely amazing.  I have to admit, I had a difficult time using this yarn for someone other than myself.

The pattern, In Threes Baby Sweater, can be found on Ravelry.  It's quite the popular pattern.  Almost six thousand knitters have listed their projects on the site.  That's quite a lot!  I found it to be fairly simple.  I did make some adjustments to make it a little bit larger.  I want my daughter to be able to wear this as long as possible!  (Rather embarrassingly, I did not write down any notes as to how I upped the size, however, I'm sure it wasn't too difficult.  Maybe next time, because I will be knitting this pattern again.)

This yarn is awesome.  I really can't say enough good things about it.  It's Tinker Island Fingering from String Theory, Hand Dyed Yarn, INC.  It's a 2 ply 100% superwash domestic merino fingering weight yarn. The color is absolutely stunning.  I kept knitting until I used all 425 luscious yards of this beautiful yarn. I want more of the Tinker Island yarn.  Lots more.  Believe me, you want to give this yarn a try!

The buttons were from my stash, I'm pretty sure they were red tag items from JoAnn's, but I'm pretty sure that these are the same.  The buttons shimmer and change color in the light, which looks amazing with the blue yarn.

You can find String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn, INC at the following:

Have you knitted the In Threes Sweater? What did you think of it? Are you lucky enough to have been able to work with this yarn? I'd love to hear all about it!

I love sharing my projects around the blogosphere.  Here are some of my favorite link ups

Cherry Twist Knit Hat with String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn

How do you like my new hat?

The Marshall Island Sport yarn that I received from String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn was really fantastic to knit.  It worked up really well!  The stitch definition is beautiful.  This stunning colorway is Sterling.  I love the ever so slight color variations.  It really brings the 100% Merino wool alive. I absolutely love this hat!  My daughter likes it too.  This particular project was selfish knitting, but since each skein has 350 yards of yarny goodness, I do have enough remaining to make her a matching hat.

The Cherry Twist Hat by Unravel Me is actually a really simple pattern.  It cleverly uses smocking-like stitches to easily create a complicated looking texture. In essence it's a basic knit two and purl two hat.  Now, I do have to say, I completely mis-read the instructions both the first and the second time around, so I did have to do a bit of frogging.  (In my defense, I was sick.)  If you're at all confused when reading the directions just remember that it is based around knit two then purl two.  (But you probably won't be confused, because the instructions really aren't confusing; I was probably just in my own little brain fog when knitting it the first -- and second -- time.)  The yarn looks brand new despite multiple froggings.  I've worked with some lower quality yarns that looked terrible after just one frogging.

Also, just in case you were wondering, we are not visiting Antarctica.  Do you know where we were visiting?  Take a guess in the comments!

Talk to me!  Have you used this yarn?  What were your thoughts?  Have you knit this hat?  Have you had to frog something that was the result of a silly mistake recently?

Please, show my wonderful sponsor some love!

WIPS

I have a box of Works In Progress that still haven't been unpacked from the move.  I untaped the box, looked inside, pulled out a couple of projects, and pretty much left it.  The box is conveniently sitting to the side of my crafting space.  (Which is currently covered in Legos.)

I'm still knitting my Traveling Woman Shawl, although it has taken a back seat once again, poor thing, but I'm hoping to get working on it with earnest very soon.

Here's a little teaser of a crochet project that I'm just about finished with.  I need a teeny tiny amount of black yarn, and I can't find any!  I literally have boxes and boxes of yarn, but I can't find even a couple of yards of black.  I suppose I will HAVE to go yarn shopping.

Oh, I'm also planning on sewing Catherine's Halloween costume.  And the treat bags.  I should do that.  Soon.

What are you crocheting, knitting, or sewing?  Anyone else still have Halloween sewing to finish?  Or (*cough*) start?

This yarn could be yours!  Enter the easy peasy giveaway. (Ends 10/31/2015.)
I'd love it if you could show the sponsor, Chaleur Hand Dyed Yarn, some love.  She's been super sweet to work with and I want her to know how much we appreciate her generous giveaway prize.

WIPS

I've made some more progress on my In Threes Sweater, with String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn, for Catherine.  I've also been doing a bit of sewing in my crafting time this week.  I made Dominic a Fox Hat for the swimming pool and I made Catherine another Monkey Bar skirt.  I have also been loving this Corset Cuff Crochet Pattern.  I've made a few (and need to blog about them!), but this one, with Sizzle by Red Heart, is Catherine's favorite.  Obviously, I still need to attend to the tails.  (Oh those pesky tails!)

I'd love to invite everyone link up their yarn-y projects at my Yarn Fanatic Party.  (There's also a great little crochet giveaway there!)

A quick note to my international friends: I know many of you are disappointed that these giveaways are limited to US only. The problem is that there are hundreds of rules and laws regarding how giveaways are run. It can be very easy to accidentally break the law when international policy comes into play. I simply wish to keep everything as legal as possible, and for now at least that means limiting these giveaways to US entrants. I do hope that you still participate in these Yarn Fanatic Parties and that someday there might be a giveaway that you can enter!
