Crochet Owl Purse FREE Pattern

This is a sponsored post.  This post may contain affiliate links.

Did you enter September's Yarn Giveaway?

The 24/7 Cotton Yarn that Lion Brand sent me really is project inspiring.  I've been crocheting up tons of new projects to share with you!  Here's one of my favorites.  Catherine loves it too!  Which means it's a win-win project!  Those are the best!

Pattern Notes

  • Use a G hook except where noted.
  • Pattern assumes a bit of crochet knowledge -- for example, there are no notes to chain one and turn at the end of a row.
  • This is not a tested pattern.  I simply made notes as I freehanded this purse.  As such there are most assuredly mistakes and inaccuracies.  I do think that there is enough correct information here for you to replicate my project.
  • Due to the above (assumes previous knowledge and it's not a tested pattern) I would say that this is an intermediate crochet pattern.

I am only sharing the barest of instructions here for the crocodile stitch.  I am working on a full photo tutorial for this section, but for now this pattern presumes that you know how to crochet the crocodile stitch.  (Here's a great Craftsy class all about the crocodile stitch.)

Start with a chain of 25.
Make your starting ladder for the crocodile stitch.
5 crocodile scales in rose
4 scales in tangerine
5 scales in lemon
4 in sage
5 in aqua
4 in rose
5 in tangerine
4 in lemon
5 in sage
4 in aqua
5 in rose

Crochet the final "locking in" row with single crochet instead of double crochet stitches.
Single crochet across the top.

Back and Flap

With tangerine yarn
Chain 2
2 sc in stitch
2 sc in each (4)
2 sc, 2, 2sc (6)
Without breaking yarn sc down one side and up the next side of the triangle.

With rose yarn
8 sc across
Please note for the following 8 rows you will be adding two stitches to each row.  To do this single crochet two stitches in both the first and the last stitch of each row.
10 sc
12 sc
14 sc
16 sc
18 sc
20 sc
22 sc
24 sc
24 across for approximately 35 rows.

H hook -- with two strands of yarn, one auqa and one sage
ch 5
4 single crochet across
Repeat until you reach your desired length

Chain 2
6 in first chain.
Two sc in each stitch (12)
2 sc in next st, sc in next st (18)
sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st (24)

Add black buttons.

Assemble using your prefered method.  I used slip stitches, which give an added detail but bulky seams.  I think next time I will use a whip stitch and some thread for a more understated seam.

Here's a little project teaser.  This was my first foray into the crocodile stitch.  It won't be my last.  I love it!  I spent a lot of time looking through online tutorials, YouTube videos, and the like so once I started actually crocheting it was a breeze.  (Of course, after the fact I saw that there is a great class all about the Crocodile Stitch on Craftsy by Tamara Kelly, the crochet legend.)

I am hosting a crochet pattern giveaway, sponsored by Little Abbee, for this absolutely adorable dress pattern.  {Enter here.}  It ends September 7, 2016.

As always, I'll be sharing this with Frontier Dreams and Small Things.

Crochet Pattern Review: Sunrise Sunday Dress

This is a sponsored post.  This post contains affiliate links.

Sponsor: Little Abbee Patterns

Doesn't Samantha look lovely in her Sunrise Sunday Dress?  This might be my newest favorite pattern.  I certainly think it's my favorite crochet dress pattern.  It doesn't take much to start crocheting this beautiful dress!  The materials that you'll need are:
  • 250 Yards Fingering Weight Yarn #1
  • Crochet Hook Size: D/3-3.25MM
  • Sharp Needle for sewing and weaving in your loose ends
  • Four 1/2" buttons

This adorable crochet dress has a square neck and short sleeves.  While I made slightly modified dress this pattern also includes written instructions to make it as a top.  Since it is crocheted from the top down it is easy to adjust the length.

I had a little fingering weight yarn left over from a previous project, my light and lacy infinity scarf.  It's a gorgeous hand-dyed coral colorway in a 75% Superwash Merino Wool / 25% Nylon mix.  I've been hoarding this little bit of yarn for a special project.  When I saw the Sunrise Sunday Dress I knew they would complement one another perfectly.  I didn't have quite enough to make it a true dress length, but I love it anyways!

My sweet model showing off the light and lacy scarf

I used some mother of pearl buttons from my stash.  (You can get similar ones on Amazon.)  I think they offer a lovely contrast to the coral yarn.  (Is it just me, or is it near impossible to photograph mother of pearl?)

I highly recommend this pattern. The pattern is very well written, and has helpful photos, which make it easy to follow. There are quite a few steps, so I recommend printing it off so that you can mark exactly where you are for when you need to put it down.  Also, I think that it is important to note that Bailee offers full support on her patterns.  This means that you can always send her an email and she'll help you out!  That is absolutely amazing customer service.

7 Quick Takes: August Edition

This post contains affiliate links.

1. Who can believe August is almost over?  Of course, while my northern friends and family are preparing for the cooler weather of autumn I'm down here in Florida just trying not to get heat stroke.  Seriously, the pumpkin craze is delicious, but it's a little strange in 90+ degree weather.

2. Have you seen any of my "All Dolled Up" posts?  I'm running a whole series right now all about dolls.  Yep, I'm totally reliving my childhood.  It's awesome.

3. For those of you who don't do Disney World this won't mean a thing to you, but those of you who do  . . .  The other day we went to Hollywood Studios and happened to walk by Toy Story Mania when the wait was only 15 minutes.  In the middle of the afternoon.  We have no idea why, because the line filled up almost immediately after us, but it was amazing!  We got to ride it twice (the second time was with our Fast Pass) with minimal waiting in line.  I even scored my personal best and one of the times I even beat my hubby!  Of course, the second time he beat me by quite a wide margin.  We are unabashedly competitive.

4. Speaking of competitiveness, we've been playing lots of Settlers of Catan.  (It's such a great game!)  Catherine, who's only six, totally "gets" the game but is getting annoyed that she hasn't won yet.  She's been close on more than one occasion, but either Daddy or I end up victorious.  But it brings up an interesting discussion -- do you, or should you, let your kids win?  What do you think?

The Princess in the Opal Mask and The Opal Crown are two really nice quick reads.  I thoroughly enjoyed them.  I had picked up Opal Mask on a whim and tore through it and then had to wait what seemed like eons to read Crown -- it was about two weeks.  The writing style is pleasant, the story entertaining (albeit slightly predictable), and it's clean (finally, a more grown up book without cussing and sex).  I really hope that Jenny Lundquist will continue to write!  I am sorely disappointed that my library doesn't have her two other books, but I added them to the collection requests.

Also, I just LOVE the cover art for these two books.  Gorgeous.  Simply stunning.

6.  I mentioned this before, but we bought a house.  There are lots of projects that we'd like to do, some projects that we have to do, and some projects that we dream of doing.  One of the smaller projects that my husband recently finished is in our living room. We have a slightly dated built in flanking a fireplace (yep, in sunny Florida).  Here's a rather awkward photo of the built ins -- you are looking at the living room over the kitchen counter.

It's not bad or anything, but it's not quite my taste.  I have dreams of doing something like this:

Dream Inspiration Found Here
Isn't that gorgeous?  But, you know, we're not really ready to start busting up walls and everything else that is needed for a transformation like that.  However, my husband spent some time adding some shelves and I'm totally loving the difference that it makes!  Here's how this space looked before.  Nothing really fit quite right in those bottom spaces.  They both just ended up being filled with random electronics and pool stuff.  (By the way, Qwirkle is quite a fun family game.)

Here's how they look now!  I think it's a fairly large transformation for such a simple project.  The baskets were ones that we already had, but I think they fit just about perfectly!  Now we just have to hide all the wires from the electronics and get the decor in the arches perfected. It's all a work in progress.

7. My kids are asking for second breakfast. I'm raising hobbits.

I'll be linking up with Kelly.

Crochet Pattern Review: The Selena Dress

This is a sponsored post.  It contains affiliate links.

Sponsor: Little Abbee Patterns
Facebook Etsy

The Selena Dress is an absolutely adorable crochet pattern designed to fit 18 inch dolls, such as my American Girl Samantha.  I think it's a great pattern!

With just a few supplies you'll be able to crochet your doll a beautiful dress.

Here's what you'll need:
I used some of Michael's Loops and Threads Woolike Yarn in Ivory from my stash.  The price is great for fingering weight yarn, especially when it's on sale, but it's an average yarn at best.  For my finishing touches I used buttons from my stash and a little bit of the 24/7 Cotton Yarn in Rose  that I received from Lion Brand for the belt.

This pattern is listed as an intermediate pattern, and I fully agree with that assessment.  There are quite a few crochet skills that you will need under your belt before you begin.  I really love that a chart is included for the beginning rows.  I will admit I goofed the count in the bodice more than once.  (I was watching the Olympics.)  In all honesty, I just forged forward after a few froggings and worked it out.  That is NOT something I recommend doing, but sometimes a girl has to to what a girl has to do, ya know?

I'm loving this All Dolled Up series!  It's been awhile since I when through my Samantha trunk.  (Maybe not as long as one might think for a thirty something year old woman . . . but it had been too long.)  I thought the original Tea Dress white shoes worked really well with the dress that I crocheted.  What do you think?  (Of course, some fun silver sandals like these would be cool too.)

(The giveaway ends September 7, 2016.  US only.)

WIPS: Too Many Tails!

This post may contain affiliate links.

Who else has a bajillion Works In Progress at the moment?  I'm only sharing a few today, but believe me there are many more spread throughout my house!

I have some crochet pattern reviews coming up this week that I think you will enjoy.  (There will also be giveaways so make sure to check back soon!) On a few of these I just need to finish weaving in the ends.  Oh, tails!  How do I hate thee?  Let me count the ways!

I love color.  I do.  Sadly though, the more colors a project has the more tails there are at the end.

Free Crochet Coaster Pattern using Lion Brand's 24/7 Cotton Yarn

I received this yarn from Lion Brand.  This post may contain affiliate links.
Brightly colored circular coasters

Coaster are a great crochet project.  The are satisfying to make because you can whip a couple up in no time if you're an experienced crocheter, but even if you're a beginner it shouldn't take too long to have a completed project!  They're also perfect for trying out new stitches and techniques, since they're so small.

Lion Brand provided me with some of their 24/7 Cotton Yarn for these coasters.  It's available in 24 beautiful colors and the mercerized cotton should hold up very well to lots of use, which is ideal for coasters!  I personally found this medium weight yarn to be an absolute pleasure to crochet.  With 186 yards I have plenty for a plethora of coasters, or a couple of other projects.  The yarn is very soft and has a great sheen to it.  I also really love the way that this yarn is constructed; it's not constantly splitting like many other cotton yarns.

Have you used this yarn yet?

Bright and cheerful crocheted coasters.

Crochet Coaster Pattern

I used the recommended crochet hook size for this yarn, which happens to be a G Hook.

1. Chain three.

2. 11 dc in first chain.  (This means that there are 12 stitches when you include the starting chain.)

3. *Single crochet between the dc stitches then chain one.*  Repeat around.  (This should give you twelve single crochet stitches and twelve chain one spaces.)

4. *3 dc cluster in chain one space, chain 2* around.  (This should give you 12 puffs and 12 chain two spaces.)

This cluster is done as follows: Make 3 half-complete double crochets into the chain one space, leaving the last loop of each stitch on the hook.  Yarn over and draw a loop through all 4 loops on the hook to complete the cluster.

5. *3 dc in chain 2 space, chain 1.*

6. Single crochet in each stitch and chain one space.  Fasten off, weave in those tails, and enjoy!

A bright crocheted coaster using Lion Brand Yarn.
The five colors I used in this coaster are: Tangerine, Jade, Lemon, Aqua, and Rose.

I will admit, I really, really, really dislike weaving in the tails at the end of a project.  While I love all of the color in the above coaster, I also think this crochet pattern is really pretty with just two colors -- and I was just able to carry the yarn up to the next row for many fewer tails!

This one uses Aqua and Jade.
This one uses Lemon and Rose.

I hope that you like this free crochet pattern!  If you make any coasters using this free pattern feel free to share them on my Facebook Page, or tag me on whatever social media you use! I'm also on Instagram, Ravelry, Pinterest, and Twitter.

What Can I Do At Disney's EPCOT With Little Kids and Babies?

This post contains affiliate links.
What can I do at Disney's EPCOT with little kids and babies?

EPCOT.  It is the "Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow".  This was something of a pet project for Walt Disney but he died before being about to see the plan through, so instead of a city we have the theme park.

Can I bring my little one on rides at Disney's EPCOT?

There are currently seven rides that guests of any height may ride.  They are as follows:
  • Ellen's Energy Adventure (Be prepared, it's 45 minutes long.) UPDATE: No longer available.
  • Journey Into Imagination With Figment
  • Living with the Land
  • The Seas with Nemo & Friends
  • Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros (World Showcase)
  • Frozen Ever After (Brand New! World Showcase)
  • Spaceship Earth

What can't little kids and babies ride?

As to be expected, there are a few rides that simply aren't safe for shorter riders (or if there are certain health concerns).  For these rides your group will need to split up.  Be sure to take advantage of the Rider Swap option to get everyone that meets the requirements on the ride!  Here's a list of the rides with height restrictions:

  • Soarin' -- 40 inches
  • Chevrolet Test Track -- 40 inches
  • Mission: SPACE -- 44 inches
  • The Sum of All Thrills -- 48 inches (54 to go upside down)* UPDATE: It's gone! I'm so sad.

*This ride is highly under-rated in my humble opinion.  Big kids and adults should be sure to check it out!

What shows will the little ones enjoy?

The following four are indoor, and air conditioned, shows that we've seen.  The first two are big hits for our family.
  • Turtle Talk With Crush
  • Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival
  • The Circle of Life
  • 'O Canada!

What else can the kids do at EPCOT?

EPCOT is neither ride heavy nor oozing animated characters like Magic Kingdom.  Yes, those two characteristics are present, but this park has a different feel.  (And there are some characters that you can ONLY meet in EPCOT, so be sure to check them out!  Mulan, Snow White, Mary Poppins, Joy, Sadness, and Baymax are some of my favorites!)

The World Showcase really is an amazing place.  I'm still discovering more details and hidey-holes.  Many of the countries have small museums that are rich with history and information.  The architecture of each section is breathtaking.  The street shows are fascinating.

Colortopia is an interactive exhibit where my whole family (including the toddler) could spend hours.  (Sadly, though rightly, they do try to keep people moving through the attraction.)

Phineas and Ferb: Agent P's World Showcase Adventure is a smart phone based scavenger hunt through the World Showcase.  (You can borrow one if you need to.)

The aquariums at the SeaBase (with Nemo) are mesmerizing.  You can watch the Dolphins play, see the manatees float about, marvel at the sea horses, and rediscover a sense of wonder.   (Of course, you can also get a cheesy, yet adorable, photo in a shark's mouth.)

Two kids in Bruce's mouth, from Finding Nemo, located in the Seas at EPCOT.

Some of the rides have interactive games at the departure point of the ride, such as Spaceship Earth, Mission: SPACE, Figment, and Test Track.  This is especially helpful for the rides that your kids don't meet the height requirements.

Finally, this is a Disney park.  So, of course, there are character meet and greets!  This is the place, as in these characters don't appear in the other parks, to meet Baymax, Joy, Sadness, and Belle (in her blue dress -- you can see Belle in her ball gown during Enchanted Tales, but that one isn't a true meet and greet).

A girl meets Baymax, from Big Hero 6, in a character meet and greet at EPCOT.

Keep in mind that things at Walt Disney World are constantly changing.  Something that might be there today might not be there tomorrow.  Something that is there today might not have been there yesterday.  If you notice something on this page that needs updating please leave me a comment.

What Can I Do At Disney's Hollywood Studios with Little Kids and Babies?

This post contains affiliate links.

(Note: Jake, sadly, is currently NOT scheduled as a regular meet and greet.)

Hollywood Studios.  I'll be honest, this park isn't a great one for little kids (and babies) that enjoy rides.

Can I bring my little ones on rides at Disney's Hollywood Studios?

There are only two rides for guests of any height.
If you have a toddler, that is at least 32 inches tall, then you have one more option.
  • Alien Spin (32 inches)

Are the shows appropriate for all ages?

Yes!  Also, Beauty and the Beast is an absolute must see for any Disney experience.  The singing and the dancing will keep everyone entertained.  Random fact: This show started on November 22, 1991, which was also the day the animated classic opened, which was the first time that a stage show opened the same day as the movie that inspired it.
  • Muppet*Vision 3D
  • Voyage of The Little Mermaid
  • Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage
  • Disney Jr Live on Stage
  • For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration
  • Indiana Jones™ Epic Stunt Spectacular!

What characters can I meet?

There are a few characters that are currently exclusive to Hollywood Studios.
  • Chewbacca
  • Darth Vader
  • Stormtroopers*
  • The Jawas **
  • Green Army Men from Toy Story
  • Doc Mcstuffins
  • Vampirina
  • Olaf
*The Stormtroopers frequently patrol the area in character.  This means that they don't really stop and pose for pictures.  They do interact with guests though, so be prepared!

**Not technically a "Meet and Greet", but they walk around and interact with guests in the Launch Bay.  They might even do some trading, since they are traders by trade.

What can't my little kids and babies ride?

Below are the rides that you will need to utilize the rider swap option if you have little ones in your group.

Slinky Dog Dash: 38 inches
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run: 38 inches
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: 40 inches
Star Tours – The Adventures Continues: 40  inches
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™: 40  inches
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith: 48 inches

What else is at Hollywood Studios?

If you have Star Wars lovers this really is a fun place to be.  As you saw above, there are some great Star Wars Character meets, plus there's Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple, which is a super interactive experience for the kids.  There's a fun Stormtrooper show on the main stage.  The Star Wars fireworks are also quite enjoyable.  Of course, Fantasmic, the night show, is absolutely fantastic.

Keep in mind that things at Walt Disney World are constantly changing.  Something that might be there today might not be there tomorrow.  Something that is there today might not have been there yesterday.  If you notice something on this page that needs updating please leave me a comment.  This park in particular will be evolving a lot over the next couple of years!

Cat On Rock -- A Story of Trash to Treasure

This post brought to you by Sea glass jewelry. The content and opinions expressed below are that of The Philosopher's Wife.

Cat On Rock.  The name drew me to this store, for the simple reason that it's so unusual.  I mean, there has to be a story there, right?   After reading through Kristina's sweet account of rescuing an abandoned kitten on a beach in Barbados I understood the name.

Once I finished the entire About Us section I began browsing through all of the Sea glass jewelry. I was hooked.  Every handcrafted piece is eye catching and stunning.  I personally own a few pieces of sea glass jewelry, but nothing like Kristina's designs.  One of my favorite items would have to be the Seahorse.  It's beautiful and whimsical.  Isn't it lovely?

Sea glass is unique.  It's glass that has been discarded, or trashed, in the sea and then worn and etched from the water, sand, and sun.  It can take almost 10 years of tumbling about in the sea for a piece of glass to reach "sea glass" status.  Then Kristina works her magic with the once abandoned glass, some wire and beads to create all of the dazzling items found at Cat On Rock.

One man's trash really can be another's treasure.

Breastfeeding Awareness Month Giveaway (Ends 8/24) US

I would like to preface this giveaway with a note: Breastfeeding is great and yes, it has many benefits.  However, I simply cannot stand when people, especially  other mothers, shame those who use bottles.  Just, please, feed the baby!

On August 6, 2011, the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) officially declared that August is National Breastfeeding Month. This breastfeeding campaign, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was designed to encourage women in their breastfeeding journey by providing support and research about breastfeeding. For example, did you know that new research shows that babies who are exclusively breastfed for six months are less likely to develop ear infections, diarrhea and respiratory illnesses, and may be less likely to develop childhood obesity? That's pretty cool, right?! In recognition of National Breastfeeding Month (NBM), I'm partnering with a few of my favorite blogs and brands to celebrate! We want to support you in your breastfeeding journey by providing you with some amazing products to help along the way! The winner of this giveaway will receive an amazing prize package that includes all of the following: Lansinoh: The Lansinoh family started over 30 years ago with a breastfeeding mom creating her own pure lanolin nipple cream when none other could be found. Today, their breastfeeding and baby supplies are still made by moms, for moms and they put thought, care, and practicality into all of their products. Lansinoh is going to give one lucky mom these awesome items:
  • Lansinoh's brand new Smartpump Double Electric Breast Pump uses Bluetooth technology to connect seamlessly to the Lansinoh Baby App, where you can track pumping sessions, baby's activities and more, simplifying your pumping routine. Three customizable pumping styles mimic baby's natural feeding pattern to maximize milk production and comfort. Hygienic closed system design guarantees no milk backup in tubing or motor for easier cleaning. The Lansinoh Smartpump Double Electric Breast Pump Includes: Two sizes of ComfortFit flanges with soft, flexible rims for ideal fit and comfort, cooler bag with ice pack, four bottles, two bottle stands and a carrying tote. Lansinoh's wide-neck, BPA and BPS free bottles make milk transfer easier and are compatible with the Lansinoh NaturalWave Nipple, so you can pump, store and feed baby conveniently all with the same bottle. Also includes AC Adapter or can be used with 6 AA batteries for on the go pumping (batteries not included). Check out this in depth review of the Lansinoh Smartpump for more info.

Momsense: Almost every new breastfeeding mom wonders if her baby is getting enough to drink. Momsense developed a patented technology to measure a baby’s breast milk volume intake when nursing! The Momsense Smart Breastfeeding Meter informs moms how much breast milk their baby nursed by providing real-time data and reports. This allows moms to experience peace of mind, anywhere and anytime. The Smart Breastfeeding Meter has three components: the Momsense application, earphones, and a baby safe sensor (embedded in earphones). Once the Momsense earphones are connected to the smartphone and the sensor is placed under baby’s ear, the system is set to measure breast milk intake. Their patented technology follows the baby’s unique physiological swallowing patterns. By tracking and recording the baby’s swallowing patterns, their algorithms calculate in real-time the amount of breast milk consumed by the baby. aden + anais: When CEO and co-founder Raegan Moya-Jones moved to the United States, she couldn’t find the muslin swaddles used by every mother in her native Australia.
