What Can I Do At Disney's Magic Kingdom With Little Kids and Babies?

This post may contain affiliate links.

Magic Kingdom.  This park truly is Disney.  It's classic.  It is by far the most family friendly park of the Walt Disney World Resorts. The whole family can ride together on most of the rides, see lots of shows, and meet characters.  In the past year I've been there quite often, even a few times where it was just me and the kids (ages 1 and 5).  We've always had a fantastic time, because there is simply so much we can do!

Can I bring my little one on rides at Disney's Magic Kingdom?

Yes!  There are lots of rides the whole family from babies to great-grandparents can ride together! Here is a list of all the rides that allow riders of "any height".  Keep in mind that oftentimes the youngest riders will have to sit on an adults lap, and it is one child per lap.  (It's also best to figure out who's sitting with whom before you get to the boarding zone.)
  • Astro Orbiter Height
  • Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant
  • Haunted Mansion (a little spooky)
  • "it's a small world"
  • Jungle Cruise
  • Liberty Square Riverboat (no seats!)
  • Mad Tea Party
  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Peter Pan's Flight
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Prince Charming Regal Carousel
  • Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover
  • Tom Sawyer Island (take a short boat ride over to the island that you self-explore by foot)
  • Journey of The Little Mermaid
  • Walt Disney World Railroad
  • Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress *
*A note about the Carousel of Progress. Maybe it should be classified as a show, since you sit in a theater seat and watch a stage; however, the theater moves.  Keep in mind that this means you must stay seated for the duration of the show which is just over 20 minutes long. You cannot get up to walk a fussy baby.  If you do this the entire ride has to shut down and things get messy.   You could easily nurse a fussy baby in the AC while enjoying the show.

Are the shows appropriate for all ages?

Yes!  The shows are entertaining for all ages.  The following is a list of the indoor (and air-conditioned) shows that the whole family will enjoy.
  • Country Bear Jamboree
  • The Hall of Presidents ("fun" might be a little strong for the younger crowd)
  • Mickey's PhilharMagic
  • Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
  • Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room
  • Enchanted Tales with Belle (Very entertaining and interactive)
There is always a variety of outdoor entertainment too -- everything from the Dapper Dans along Main Street to the fireworks over Cinderella's Castle.

Can I bring my baby to meet Micky?

Of course! Character meet and greets are for guests of all sizes and ages.  Let those babies get Princess kisses and meet The Mouse Himself!  I have been quite amazed at how each character that we've met has taken great care to make those brief moments special.  The characters focus on making your child happy -- no matter the age.  (They also are quite accommodating to adults.)

Dominic fell asleep while waiting to meet Cinderella.
Can you see Catherine's expression?  She was utterly enthralled and amazed by the experience.

What can't my little kids and babies ride?

There are a few rides that simply aren't safe for shorter riders (or if there are certain health concerns).  For these rides your group will need to split up.  Be sure to take advantage of the Rider Swap option to get everyone that meets the requirements on the ride!  Here's a list of the rides with height restrictions:
  • Tomorrowland Speedway -- Height: 32 inches
  • The Barnstormer -- Height: 35 inches
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train -- Height: 38inches
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad -- Height: 40 inches
  • Splash Mountain -- Height: 40 inches
  • Stitch's Great Escape! -- Height: 40inches
  • Space Mountain -- Height: 44 inches

These two attractions aren't rides, or shows, or a character greeting, but they are fun for all ages:
  • Swiss Family Treehouse
  • Casey Jr. Splash 'N' Soak Station

As you can see, there is plenty to keep your whole family, including little kids and babies, busy all day long!  In fact, I would be shocked if you were able to fully experience in the whole park in a day. (Personally, I've been there 20+ times in the past year and I still feel like there's stuff I haven't done or seen!)  If you can, spend multiple days enjoying the magic at Magic Kingdom.

Keep in mind that things at Walt Disney World are constantly changing.  Something that might be there today might not be there tomorrow.  Something that is there today might not have been there yesterday.  Attractions will need maintenance.  If you notice something on this page that needs updating please leave me a comment.

So, I'm curious.  Did/do you have any of the listed products?  I have used different variations of some of them for my kids.  Both have loved a very simple bouncer.  (Seriously, it was worth it's weight in gold!)  I must say the Sophie teether always seemed it a bit pricey, but I've yet to meet a mom who had one and didn't love it.  I also think that baby wearing has been a life saver for me.  It might not be for everyone, but if you find a carrier that works for you then it is worth any price!

$150 Visa Gift Card & Soothing Prize Pack (Ends 2/11) US

Welcome to the Soothe and Play Giveaway, generously sponsored by Medi-Pals!

About today's sponsor: Having a sick infant or child can be emotional for both the child and caregiver, and that's why Medi-Pals created their kid-friendly medication dispensers. Available in 3 fun characters, Medi-Pals dispensers are familiar and fun for the infant, easy for the caregiver to use, and they always ensure that the child is getting the accurate dosage of medicine. Also, Medi-Pals are made in the USA! Thrifty Nifty Mommy recently had the chance to review the Medi-Pals medication dispensers, and she said they worked like a charm! Be sure to check out her full review to get the details on how these dispensers work.

Key benefits of Medi-Pals pacifier medicine dispensers:
  • They're softer than a straight syringe, and the syringe sits snugly in the nipple, so no medicine gets lost or stuck to the sides.
  • They're accurate - the caregiver is in complete control of dosage.
  • The diverter on the pacifier nipple fans the medicine to the sides, not straight to the back of the child's throat, so that the child won't gag and spit the medicine out.
  • They're reusable, dishwasher-safe, and easy to clean.
  • The pacifier and faceplate are easy to put together and take apart. You can even change faceplates!
  • They work with more than just oral vitamins, pain relievers, and oral antibiotics—it can also be used with baby food or even honey. If you can get it into the syringe, it will work.
Medi-Pals wants to help you SOOTHE your baby so they'll be ready to PLAY - that's why they've put together an AMAZING prize package for one lucky person!

This prize package is valued at over $500 and includes:
  • 2 Medi-Pals dispensers: Your children will get to take their vitamins and medicine stress-free with Freddie the Frog and Lilly the Ladybug.

A Crochet Project: Baby Bulldog Hat

I recently had an occasion where a Baby Bulldog Hat would be the perfect baby gift.  (Or at least a pretty decent gift.)  This is my end result, what do you think?

Materials and Equipment:
  • Size H crochet hook
  • large needle (for stitching the mouth and attaching all the pieces)
I used all Caron Simply Soft Yarns in the following colors:
  • Blue Mint
  • Grey Heather
  • Black
  • Off White
Additionally I used two brown buttons for the eyes.

Sarah's Puppy Hat Pattern was my inspiration.  My crocheting seems to be tighter than hers, or maybe it's just that my kiddos have large heads, but I made the 6-9 month size and it fits my four month old perfectly.

To make it more "bulldog-ish" I made a few changes to Sarah's pattern.  I did not add an inner ear color.  I made two "eye patches" in off white and used them as part of the eyes.  I attached the nose and stitched the mouth on a large oval.

My handsome little model was more interested in blowing bubbles and playing with his feet than smiling.  He's still pretty cute though, isn't he?

Thanks for stopping by my little blog!  I love joining various parties around the web, like these and Hookin' On Hump Day!

HALO SleepSack (A Product Review)

I received a SleepSack in exchange for my review. This post may contain affiliate links.

The Halo SleepSack is a wearable blanket for babies.  It was developed by Bill Schmid, who tragically lost his daughter to SIDS.

I received a size small, which is for 10 to 18 pounds.  This is perfect for Dominic for this summer!

Features:
  • Arm and neck opening sized for a safer fit.
  • Use over regular sleepwear instead of loose blankets.
  • Inverted zipper for easy diaper changes.  Won't pinch baby's chin.
  • Sleeveless to help reduce risk of overheating.
  • Premium fabrics.
  • Unique, roomy sack design recognized by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute as "hip healthy".

Here's Dominic in a regular blanket.  He's a master escape artist.  As a newborn he loved being swaddled completely, but after a few weeks he really wanted his arms to be free.

Here he is with the SleepSack.  He can have his arms free, which he loves, and still be just the right amount of cozy and safe.

The SleepSack that I received to review has happy little blue and green alligators.  Aren't they cute?

I just have to finish with another picture of my adorable model, who (along with mommy) gives this product a thumbs up!

You can purchase your own HALO SleepSack at a variety of retailers including Amazon

A New Product for You & Baby: Latch Bottles by Munchkin

I received the following products in exchange for my honest opinion.

Have you seen the new Latch Bottles from Munchkin?

I received a package of bottles so that I can share my experiences with my readers.  I haven't actually introduced Dominic to them just yet.  I had nursing troubles with my daughter (I ended up exclusively pumping for her) so I want to be entirely sure that the breastfeeding is going fantastic before introducing any bottles.  (No matter how awesome they might be!)

I still want to tell you all about these bottles though!

The bottles, with their unique accordion-style nipple, are specially designed to be similar to the breast -- which is super helpful for someone who wants to be able to nurse but also use a bottle.  Further, they mimic the "pumping" action Baby uses while breastfeeding.

Another feature of the special nipples on these bottles help reduce the intake of air while feeding.  This should help with colic and gas.

There are three stages of the nipples: Stage One is for newborns, Stage Two starts at three months, and Stage Three starts at six months.

Like most bottles you need to boil them before your first use.  After that you just need hot soapy water or you can put them in a dishwasher!  Now that I finally have a dishwasher I am a huge fan of anything that doesn't need hand-washing.

If you have any more questions, check out the Latch Bottle FAQs.
Starting May 1, 2014 you can purchase your own bottles from Target and other retailers.

I Knit a Baby Sweater! (Including a Link to the Pattern)

I've only been knitting for a short while, but I really have been wanting to try to make a sweater.  I must admit, while I really wanted to make one I was rather intimidated.  Nancy, who can be found at Of Wool and Loveliness, suggested that I start with The Baby Boy 5 Hour Sweater.  After looking the pattern over I decided to take the plunge!

Before I even cast on a single stitch I read through all of the comments on the Ravelry page, which I would highly recommend to any beginner.  This really helped me to understand what was going on in the few places where the pattern was a little unclear.  I also looked through a lot of the completed projects and blog posts.

This sweater pattern does not include instructions for buttonholes.  I did know that before I started, but since it was my first sweater I did not want to try adding anything to the pattern.  There are quite a few people who made this sweater and left notes on how they added buttons, so if I make this sweater again I  will add buttonholes.

This is probably more a critique of my knitting than of the pattern, although other knitters had the same issue, but the pattern claims to be size 0 - 3 months and my sweater is clearly larger than the other little baby clothes I've been washing lately.

Other notes: This sweater is worked from the top down in one piece.  (Very clever construction, if you ask me!)  I was able to use only one set of circular needles. Also, another critique of my knitting, it certainly took me longer than five hours to complete.  I'm a newbie knitter though, so I can't hold that against the pattern!

I have to say, I'm a little bit proud of my first sweater!  It looks like a sweater, it should be able to function as a sweater, and I made it!

(Of course, Catherine has now requested that I make her a purple sweater.  If you have any little girl size 4/5 sweater pattern recommendations, I'd love to hear them!)

Tell me about the first sweater you knitted!  Was it for you?  Or for someone else?  Did you (or the recipient) like wearing it?

Crochet Shell Stitch Baby Blanket Pattern

With Porcupine's arrival getting closer every day, I've been thinking a lot about baby items.  Then, while I was organizing photos, I came across these pictures of a crocheted shell stitch baby blanket that I never shared with you!

This particular crocheted baby blanket is an older project, I believe that I completed it shortly after my Baby Blanket Fit for a Little Diva (which is roughly the same pattern).  The yarn is 100% cotton, which believe it or not, I had found at my local dollar store!  I can't remember what hook I used, but I bet it was around an I.

I have only used this crochet shell pattern for baby blankets, however, I think that it would really well as a larger afghan or throw.  (In fact, that just might be an idea for my next big crochet project . . . )

Crochet Shell Stitch Baby Blanket Pattern:*

Chain your desired amount.  (I can't remember exactly how many I did, but I am pretty sure an odd amount works best.  Although, it is not a problem to have extra chains -- they can be unraveled or tucked in.)

Row 1: 2 double crochet (dc) in 4th chain (ch) from hook, *skip 2 chain (ch), 1 single crochet (sc) in next chain (ch), skip 2 chain (ch), 5 double crochet (dc) in next ch *. Repeat from * to * until 3 chain (ch) remain, skip 2 chain (ch), 1 single crochet (sc) in last chain (ch). Chain (ch) 3, turn.

Row 2: 2 double crochet (dc) in the first single crochet (sc), * 1 single crochet (sc) in the 3rd double crochet (dc) of 5 double crochet (dc) group, 5 double crochet (dc) in single crochet (sc) *. Repeat from * to *, end row with 1 single crochet (sc) in 3rd chain of previous row.

Repeat row two over and over and over . . .

Once the blanket has reached your desired size single crochet around all of the edges.

Now, you can consider yourself finished with your baby blanket, or you can add a decorative edging.  On this blanket I added a edge based on the shell pattern used in the body of the blanket.

*This shell pattern, while a basic shell pattern, is one that I originally discovered at Project Linus.
